Bubur Ayam, Indonesian Rice Porridge with Chicken Flakes

Bubur Ayam

Bubur Ayam is one of the most popular breakfast dishes in Indonesia. As implied by its name, it consists of rice porridge, chicken flakes, shredded cakwe, crackers, fried soya beans which are seasoned with chicken stock, chili sauce, and sweet soy sauce. Bubur Ayam Cirebon, which is the most popular variety of this dish in Jakarta, also put skewed chicken livers and intestine, and sometimes boiled quail eggs as side dishes. In some place, the cook will add chopped chinese celery as garnish.

It is originally sold as a street food here in Indonesia, so the price is really affordable. It ranges from Rp. 5.000,- to Rp. 10.000,- (about US$ 0.5- US$1) depends on side dishes you have with the main course. It is usually sold using mobile booth (gerobak) or a permanent food stall.

The taste is a great blend of savory, sweet, and hot at the same time. Crackers also have a nice contribution by giving crispy texture to the dish. For some people it might not make you really full, but  it is really a nice way to start your day.

Since it is famous as a breakfast course, you might have difficulties finding bubur ayam at night or during lunchtime. But some well-known bubur ayam stalls in Jakarta open all day long and even at nights, so you don’t have to worry. In Jakarta, Tebet area is one of homes of the famous bubur ayam stalls. Anytime you go to Indonesia, give it a try!
